The house in Capernaum was packed. People filled every room and crowded the doorway to hear Jesus. Four men arrived carrying a friend on a mat. He was paralysed and could not walk. There was no way in. So they climbed onto the flat roof, dug through it and lowered their friend down in front of Jesus. Mark tells this story in his second chapter, and it remains one of the most vivid pictures of faith in action.

The four friends and the roof

Jesus’ fame had spread, and so many people gathered that there was no room even at the door. The paralysed man could not come on his own. His friends carried him, and when the way was blocked, they found another. Houses in that region often had flat roofs made of beams, branches and packed earth. Digging through would have been noisy and messy.

Mark says, “When Jesus saw their faith.” The friends’ faith is noticed first.

Forgiveness and walking out

Jesus surprised everyone by saying, “Son, thy sins be forgiven thee.” He addressed the man’s deepest need before his physical one. Some scribes thought, “Who can forgive sins but God only?” They saw his words as blasphemy. Jesus asked which was easier: to say “thy sins be forgiven” or “arise, and take up thy bed, and walk”. He then healed the man to show his authority.

The man stood up, took his mat and walked out in front of everyone. The crowd was amazed and glorified God. The story shows the power of friends who carry each other to Jesus through prayer, support and persistence.

Obstacles and Capernaum

When the door was blocked, the friends did not give up. Faith often finds creative ways around obstacles. Who in your life needs you to carry them in prayer? Lord, make me a friend who brings others to you. Capernaum, on the shore of the Sea of Galilee, was the base for much of Jesus’ ministry in Galilee. Archaeologists have uncovered remains of houses and a synagogue there.

Someone had to repair that roof afterwards. Nobody in Capernaum seems to have minded, because a man who arrived on a mat had walked out on his own feet.
