“Do not fear, for I am with you”: a devotional on Isaiah 41:10
Many Christians have it written on a card, a wall or a phone screen. “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” Isaiah 41:10 is short enough to memorise and strong enough to lean on.
Do not fear
Isaiah 40 to 55 speaks to God’s people facing exile and fear. Powerful nations were rising. Israel felt small and forgotten. In chapter 41, God reminds them that he chose them, that he called them “my servant”, and that he has not rejected them. The verse begins with a command: do not fear. This is not a denial that there are frightening things in the world. It is an instruction to trust that fear does not have the final word.
I am with you
The first reason given is presence. God does not promise that trouble will not come. He promises that his people will not face it alone. Throughout Scripture, the answer to fear is the same: “I am with you.”

The second reason is relationship. God is not a distant power but “your God”. The covenant bond means he takes responsibility for his people. The verse then lists three actions. First, God will strengthen. When our own strength runs out, his supply does not.
I will help you
Second, God will help. The word suggests coming alongside someone in need, the way a friend helps carry a load. Third, God will uphold his people with his righteous right hand. In the ancient world, the right hand was the hand of power. Being held by it meant being kept from falling. Fear takes many forms: fear of losing a job, of illness, of the future, of failure. This verse does not solve every problem. It does change the person facing the problem, by reminding them who stands beside them.
Memorise it
Isaiah 41:10 is short enough to learn by heart in a few minutes. Many believers find that repeating it in moments of fear, before an exam, in a hospital waiting room or during a sleepless night, steadies them in a way that general encouragement cannot. Write it on a card and keep it where you will see it.
Lord, you have told me not to fear, because you are with me. When I am dismayed, remind me that you are my God. Strengthen me, help me and hold me up with your right hand today. Amen.
