School fees are due, rent is coming up and the price of food keeps rising. Worry about money and basic needs is a daily reality for many families. Jesus spoke directly to that worry in the Sermon on the Mount. After pointing to the birds and the lilies, he gave a simple instruction: “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you” (Matthew 6:33, KJV).

The birds, the lilies and seeking first

Jesus had just told his listeners not to worry about what they would eat, drink or wear. Worry, he said, cannot add a single hour to life. “Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap… yet your heavenly Father feedeth them.” “Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin.” Even Solomon was not dressed as beautifully.

“First” is the key word. Jesus does not say to ignore needs, but to put God’s kingdom at the top of life’s priorities.

The kingdom and tomorrow

The kingdom of God means God’s rule in our lives and in the world: his justice, mercy and purposes. Seeking righteousness means pursuing right living and right relationships with God and others. The promise is that God will provide what we need. It is not a promise of luxury but of care. Jesus adds, “Take therefore no thought for the morrow… Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.” Focus on today.

Seeking the kingdom first can shape how we spend money, use time and treat people, even in hardship.

Work, trust and little faith

The verse does not forbid work or planning. It asks us to work and plan without anxiety, trusting God. Father, I am anxious about many things. Help me to seek your kingdom first and trust you with the rest. What would change in your week if you put God’s kingdom first? Jesus gently rebuked his listeners: “O ye of little faith.” Worry, he suggested, comes from forgetting the Father’s care.

Birds do not plan their meals and flowers do not sew their petals. Jesus used them to remind worried people that their Father knows what they need.
