“Be ye transformed”: a devotional on Romans 12:2
Water takes the shape of whatever container it is poured into. Paul warned the believers in Rome that people can be like that too, shaped by the world around them without noticing. His answer was a call to change from the inside: “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God” (Romans 12:2, KJV).
Living sacrifices and transformation
Romans 12 begins a new section of Paul’s letter. After explaining God’s mercy in chapters 1 to 11, he turns to how believers should live in response. Verse 1 asks believers to present their bodies as “a living sacrifice”, a whole life offered to God. Verse 2 explains how that offering works out. The world presses people into its mould through values about money, status, success and pleasure. Paul says believers do not have to accept that shape.

The Greek word for “transformed” is the root of the English word “metamorphosis”, the change of a caterpillar into a butterfly. It describes deep change, not surface adjustment.
Renewing the mind
Transformation begins in the mind. What we think about, dwell on and believe shapes how we live. Minds are renewed through Scripture, prayer, worship and fellowship. It is a daily process, not a one-time event. As the mind is renewed, believers become better able to recognise God’s will, which Paul calls good, acceptable and perfect.
Renewal may mean rethinking how we use money, treat people, spend time or respond to social media. The rest of Romans 12 shows that a renewed mind leads to humility, love, hospitality and peace with others.
A prayer and small steps
Lord, where I have been shaped by the world, reshape me. Renew my mind today. Which messages from the world around you most need to be tested against God’s word? Renewal often happens through small habits: reading a passage each morning, memorising a verse, choosing what to watch and listen to, and spending time with people who encourage faith. Over months and years, these small choices reshape a life.
Water has no choice about the shape of its container. Paul’s good news is that believers do, and the change starts with what fills the mind.
