“All things work together for good”: a devotional on Romans 8:28
The verse is often quoted too quickly. A friend loses a job, a child falls ill, a marriage ends, and someone says, “All things work together for good.” Romans 8:28 is true, but when it is used to rush past pain, it can wound. Read in its place in Paul’s letter, it carries real comfort.
The verse
“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” The older King James translation reads, “All things work together for good to them that love God.” The verse does not say that everything that happens is good. Illness, injustice and death are not good. It says God works in all things, including bad ones, for the good of his people.
Groaning and good
Romans 8 speaks openly about suffering. Paul writes that “the whole creation has been groaning”, that believers “groan inwardly” as they wait, and that the Spirit intercedes “through wordless groans”. Verse 28 comes in the middle of this honesty about pain.

Verse 29 explains the good: to be “conformed to the image of his Son”. God’s goal is to make his people like Christ. That can happen through hardship as well as blessing.
Nothing can separate
The promise is for those who love God and are called according to his purpose. It is a family promise, rooted in a relationship. The chapter ends with one of the most powerful passages in the Bible: neither death nor life, angels nor demons, present nor future, height nor depth, “nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Joseph's story
The story of Joseph in Genesis illustrates the verse. Betrayed, enslaved and imprisoned, he later told his brothers, “You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good.” When someone is suffering, it is often better first to weep with them, as Romans 12 says, and later to share the hope of Romans 8:28 gently. Father, I do not understand everything that is happening. I trust that you are at work for my good, shaping me to be like Jesus. Help me hold on to your love when life is painful. Amen.
