“Peace I leave with you”: a devotional on John 14:27
He said it on the worst night of his life. In the upper room, hours before his arrest, Jesus told his frightened disciples: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid” (John 14:27). The peace he offered did not depend on calm circumstances. It was given in the middle of a storm.
A farewell gift
John 13 to 17 records Jesus’ final conversation with his disciples. He had washed their feet, predicted Judas’ betrayal and Peter’s denial, and told them he was going away. They were confused and afraid. “Peace I leave with you” sounds like a farewell. In Jewish culture, “shalom” was a common greeting and goodbye. Jesus turned the ordinary word into a gift.
Jesus did not offer peace in general. He offered “my peace”, the peace he himself had, rooted in his relationship with the Father.

Not as the world gives
The world’s peace often means the absence of trouble, or a calm that depends on money, health or success. Jesus’ peace can exist when those things are missing. Just before, Jesus promised the Holy Spirit, the Advocate, who would teach and remind them. The peace he gives comes through the Spirit’s presence. “Do not let your hearts be troubled.” Jesus does not say troubles will not come. He says our hearts need not be ruled by them.
Many people today struggle with anxiety. Faith does not always remove anxious feelings, but Jesus’ words offer an anchor. Prayer, Scripture and community are ways to receive his peace.
Peace in Africa and peace with God
For many African Christians facing economic hardship, insecurity or illness, this promise is a daily comfort, often quoted in prayers and songs. Each night this week, read John 14:27 before sleeping. Name one worry and hand it to God in prayer. Elsewhere, Paul writes that believers have peace with God through Christ. Earlier in the chapter, Jesus promised to prepare a place for his followers.
Lord Jesus, thank you for your peace, which the world cannot give or take away. When my heart is troubled, help me to rest in you. Amen.
