“Trust in the Lord with all your heart”: a devotional on Proverbs 3:5-6
It is printed on graduation cards, wedding programmes and office walls. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” Proverbs 3:5-6 is so familiar that it is easy to read past it. Slowly, it asks a great deal.
With all your heart
Proverbs 3 is written as advice from a father to a son. It urges him not to forget teaching, to keep love and faithfulness close, and to trust God. The book of Proverbs is practical wisdom for daily life. The verse does not say “trust God a little” or “trust God when it is convenient”. It says all your heart. In Hebrew thought, the heart includes the mind and will as well as feelings. Trust is a decision as well as an emotion.
In all your ways
“Lean not on your own understanding” does not mean ignoring thinking. Proverbs values wisdom and knowledge. It means not making your own understanding the final authority. Our view is limited; God’s is not.

“In all your ways submit to him” covers everything: work, money, relationships, plans. Faith is for Monday as much as Sunday. It reaches into decisions about jobs, marriage, business and family.
Straight paths
The promise is that God “will make your paths straight”. This does not mean life will be easy or free from turns. It means God will guide, remove obstacles and bring you where you need to be. Many believers want instant answers when making decisions. Trusting God often includes waiting, praying, seeking counsel and taking steps of faith before seeing the full picture.
Verse 7 continues: “Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and shun evil.” Trust grows from humility, from recognising that we do not know everything.
Prayer
Think of a decision you face this week. Write it down, pray about it, ask a wise person for advice and then take the next step you believe is right, trusting God with the outcome. Lord, I choose to trust you with all my heart. Forgive me when I lean only on my own understanding. Show me how to honour you in all my ways, and make my paths straight. Amen.
