“Create in me a pure heart”: a devotional on Psalm 51
The title of the psalm tells the story: “When the prophet Nathan came to him after David had committed adultery with Bathsheba.” King David had taken another man’s wife and arranged for her husband’s death. When Nathan confronted him, David did not make excuses. Psalm 51 is his prayer, one of the most honest confessions ever written.
Mercy first and naming sin
“Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions.” David begins by appealing to God’s character, not his own goodness. “For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me.” Repentance starts with honesty. David uses several words for sin, showing he understands its seriousness.
“Against you, you only, have I sinned.” David had wronged Bathsheba, Uriah and the nation, but he recognises that all sin is ultimately against God.

A new heart and restored joy
“Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.” Hyssop was used in purification rituals. David asks God to make him clean inside. “Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.” David asks for more than forgiveness. He asks for transformation.
“Restore to me the joy of your salvation.” Sin had robbed David of joy. He asks God to give it back. “Then I will teach transgressors your ways, so that sinners will turn back to you.” Forgiven people can help others find the way back.
A broken spirit and grace
“My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart you, God, will not despise.” God values sincere repentance more than religious ritual. Psalm 51 shows that no one is beyond forgiveness. It also shows that repentance means facing the truth about ourselves. In 2 Samuel 12, Nathan told David a story about a rich man who stole a poor man’s only lamb. When David angrily condemned the rich man, Nathan said, “You are the man!”
David was forgiven, though the consequences of his sin remained. Lord, have mercy on me. I confess my sin. Wash me, create in me a pure heart and restore to me the joy of your salvation. Amen.
