The wise and foolish builders: Matthew 7 and the house on the rock
Anyone who has watched floodwaters rush through Accra or Lagos in the rainy season understands this story. Two men built houses. One dug down to rock; the other built on sand. Then the rain fell, the floods came and the winds beat on both houses. One stood firm. The other collapsed, “and great was the fall of it.” Jesus told this parable to end the Sermon on the Mount, and its message is direct: listening is not enough.
Two builders and one storm
“Whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock.” “Every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand.” Both houses faced the same rain, floods and wind. Storms come to everyone, faithful or not.

The difference was the foundation. From the outside, the houses may have looked alike. The storm revealed what was hidden.
Hearing and doing
Both builders heard Jesus’ words. Only one acted on them. The wise builder put the teaching into practice. In Luke 6, the wise man “digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock”, a picture of effort and patience. The foundation is obedience to Christ’s teaching: loving enemies, forgiving, praying, giving and trusting God, as described in the Sermon on the Mount.
Storms may be illness, loss, temptation or persecution. A life built on Christ’s words can withstand them. Building on sand is quicker and easier. The parable warns against spiritual shortcuts.
For today and digging deep
The story is popular in Sunday schools, often taught with songs and actions. Which teaching of Jesus are you hearing but not yet doing? Lord, help me to hear your words and to build my life on them. When Jesus finished, the crowds were astonished, because he taught “as one having authority”. The parable presents his words as the only safe foundation.
Building on rock takes longer, but the work is never wasted. Builders in flood-prone neighbourhoods know that the foundation is the part nobody admires until the rains come. Jesus said the same is true of a life.
